My training contract so far

I recently went along to a career’s evening at a Secondary School and I was asked to prepare a presentation to all of the students aspiring to be lawyers. Whilst I was preparing my presentation, it really made me reflect on my journey towards becoming a solicitor.

A bit of background about me

I graduated from the University of Northumbria in 2016 with a First Class Honours and Masters Law degree.

I then went on to work at an international law firm for one year in their office in Belfast as a legal assistant. This job was a fantastic opportunity to gain an insight into how a law firm works and I was able to develop my understanding of the firm’s clients and sectors in which they operate. Meanwhile I was applying for training contracts in London, as I knew that is where I eventually would like to end up.

I applied for a legal firm in Romford, called McCorry Connolly, and was offered the job! I was so excited and nervous at the same time as I made the big move from Belfast to the big city lights of London. McCorry Connolly merged with Mullis & Peake LLP in February 2018, which was the start of another adventure!

My training contract

As a trainee at Mullis & Peake LLP I have rotated around the different departments. This has helped my development and understanding into the various areas of the legal world. During my training contract I have worked with multiple fee earners in each of the departments, and this has enabled me to observe good practice in action which I have then emulated in my own professional conduct.

I have been pleasantly surprised by my seat in Dispute Resolution, as there were other areas of law that I initially focussed upon for my future legal career. My time in Dispute Resolution has far exceeded my expectations and I am thoroughly enjoying it. The work has been interesting and varied and the team are friendly and supportive and have made the experience a lot more interesting.

I have really enjoyed my training contract so far. Mostly because at Mullis & Peake LLP trainees are not thought of as at ‘the bottom of the food chain’, but are key members of the team. I have been involved with all aspects of a case, given a lot of responsibility such as client contact and undertaken advocacy. The support and guidance I have been given throughout my training contract has been brilliant as the fee earners at all levels are approachable and willing to answer my questions.

Highlights of my training contract so far

There have been so many highlights! But the one that stands out for me was when I assisted with a multi-million pound land transaction. I played a proactive role in a very complicated transaction and learnt so much.

What lies ahead…

The first 18 months of my training contract have flown by and I am now into the last couple of weeks of my seat in Dispute Resolution. The thought that I am due to qualify in just over six months is very exciting and I am looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead.
