Ever wondered what historical figures like Charles Dickens wrote in their Will?

Well, now you can find out! Over 41 million Wills have recently been made publically available through an online searchable database, including many well-known historical figures.

The records available include the likes of Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and Beatrix Potter with the archive dating back some 150 years. Curiously, Charles Dickens funeral was documented as “an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner1” so perhaps he wouldn’t have anticipated his final wishes would eventually be made publically available.

As well as researching the last wishes of some highly influential individuals, many people are expected to use this as a tool to explore their own family history revealing the contents of their own ancestors’ Will’s following the rising popularity of online research into genealogy and ancestry.

Expert Commentary

“When asking our clients to consider their wishes for their estates and we highlight the importance of keeping a record of their assets and even details of social media accounts as this can assist the executors in dealing with the estate.  As a Will can become a publically available document, it is not advisable to include details of particular account and passwords in the Will itself and a separate guidance note to the executors should be provided to the executors with this additional information.”

“It is also important to consider whether there is information that you would like to be included in the Will to give more information about you.  For example, details of funeral wishes, including music to be played at the funeral, or naming charities supporting causes close to your heart. This could also give future family historians a clue about the type of person you were.”

“People sometimes also wish to include reasons for excluding a person from a Will, but they will now need to consider if they would want this information to become publicly available upon their death.”
